The Water Gardener's Bible: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building, Planting, Stocking, and Maintaining a Backyard Water Garden
Whether it is a small container of water on a deck or patio serving as home to a few plants and water creatures or a more elaborate mix of waterfalls, fountains, rockwork, and lighting, the water garden can be a lovely, spirit-soothing addition to one’s property—a place to unwind, relax, and escape the cares of the world.
But while water has been a prominent feature in garden designs for thousands of years, it is only recently—with the availability of preformed kits at the local home improvement center—that installing a beautiful water garden has become a feasible undertaking for the average homeowner. And now, with the extremely clear and complete instructions in this practical, hands-on guide, a backyard water garden is easier than ever to build and maintain.
This is a true bible on the subject—with comprehensive information on everything from choosing the right site and selecting aquatic plants and fish to pond management and problem solving. The pages are crammed with specifics about pond biology and chemistry, beneficial bacteria, fish health, nuisance algae, and electrical and child safety—all that is necessary to duplicate the sights, sounds, and sanctuary of a babbling brook, splashing fountain, or cascading waterfall right in the backyard.
Pond with new plants
Added the window boxes to hold the marginal plants. The filter trickles into them to keep the soil wet and to work as a vegetative filter. Also added the bit of a slate path that you see there. We had a pile of it that was intended for aquarium use and since that isn't going to be set up for a while, it made more sense to use it here.

Note the water hyacinths inside the bio-fall. They were not disturbed or removed during this project. In the six weeks between the pictures, the hyacinths have grown to be more than 18 inches tall! They grow hair like roots which filter the water, keeping our pond almost crystal clear all summer.

No Coffee Filters : Royal Doulton Water Filter.
No Coffee Filters
What do you mean, no coffee?
The pad bag: empty.
The emergency stash of vaccum sealed filter coffee: gone. Used up in a past emergency, no doubt. Probably when traveling to the instant-cappucino-loving in-laws.
The coffee machine in the bakery, five minutes down the road: broken.
The coffee they make tastes like reheated tar with a shot of overripe thin milk. But right now, you crave it anyway. Just a tiny shot of caffeine. To send a spark into your brain and a cloud of homeliness to your stomach.
The deadline looms large. The screen is accusingly empty. You lower your gaze to the keys. They wait like black sheep, no drive of their own. Still no coffee.
((made for coffee challenge, day 4))
Silhouettes, Caitlyn, Fedora
Some quick and dirty silhouettes, done quite spontaneously. Speedlite 550EX triggered by hand at 1/4 power. Diffused by a coffee filter rubber-banded to the head of the flash. Cheap, and you can't say it didn't work a treat.
